A giant flag to drive the boys to victory

As flags go, they don’t get much bigger than this. Instead of flying a flag from their cars, workers at the Toyota Burnaston factory in Derbyshire have made one from cars.

A crack team of 40 yard drivers and workshop technicians spent two 12 hour shifts reversing, turning and parking 400 Toyota Yaris cars into a giant St George’s Cross. The flag measures 80m by 40m and is a big message from a small car. The flag, which can be seen from 1000ft in the air and from miles around, carries with it a heartfelt ‘Good Luck’ to Sven and the Boys from the 4,350 workers at the plant.

Stu Winterburn (32) from Mickleover, a driver trainer, has been helping to choreograph the manoeuvre with military precision:

‘It’s been hard work and really tested our driving skills, but our boys are worth every minute. This is the best shot we’ve had at the World Cup in years and we want to do everything we can to help England on their way… Car-mon England!’

Richard Koscinski (40), from Alvaston, a transporter driver added:

‘I agree, this is our best chance and if Peter Crouch’s football is as good as his dancing we’re onto a winner.’

Bosses at the plant were 100% behind the idea, not only juggling teams and shifts to make sure the flag was ready but also so that their workers can watch the big game.

The Burnaston factory, where they make the Corolla and Avensis models, is an important hub for Toyota’s car manufacturing business in the UK with one car rolling off the production line every 45 seconds.
