A dozen top tuners got together at the Nardo test circuit in Southern Italy recently with the intention of smashing a few speed records.

The event was organised by Continental and the German magazine AutoBild Sportscars and featured an exotic line up of super sports vehicles. A scorching 237.8mph was achieved on a 9ff-customised Porsche 911 Cabrio, shod with ContiSportContact Vmax tyres. This fantastic result is likely to be entered as the record for the world’s fastest convertible.

Other blistering performances included a Porsche Cayenne Turbo R from Enco Tuning, fitted with ContiCrossContact UHP tyres which reached a top speed of 184mph on the 7.8 mile circuit; TechArt’s 997 Porsche Turbo managed 209 mph on ContiSportContact3 tyres whilst the Mercedes CLS-based Rocket from Brabus, shod with ContiSportContact Vmax tyres reached 228.5mph.

The demands made on the tyres are as varied as the cars. Whilst high powered SUVs need special tyres with maximum load and speed indices such as the ContiCrossContact UHP, other customised vehicles need products like the ContiSportContact3 or the Vmax for powerful handling and short braking distances.

The ContiSportContact Vmax is the ideal choice when braking world speed records. It was the first standard production road tyres to be approved for speeds up to 225mph and beyond.
